Tugas English Studio; Class Observation


ENGLISH STUDIO
“Speaking Class Observation”
Submitted to English Studio Assignment as a Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the subject





The observation was doing on March, 30 2015 in speaking class at the 1st grade English department. Anne Ratna Suminar M. Pd as the lecturer of the subject, and there were 32 students who attend in this class.
This observation includes the interactions between lecturer and the students, Lecturer’s activity and Students’ attitude in the class.
A. Interactions between Lecturer and The students during Speaking Class
1.      The lecturer greeted the students
2.      One of the students did Kultum
3.      The lecturer asks about the task "Himadiksaris Fair"
4.      The students submitted their assignments (Paper)
5.      The lecturer said "Continue our lesson with Story Telling."
6.      The student’s reactions were surprised.
7.      One of student, whose name called, came forward to tell the story about "lutung kasarung."
8.      The lecturer wrote down a score.
9.      The students paid attention, the whole class involved and reacted to the story.
10.  They were interested in the story as the lecturer laugh and so the students.
11.  Most of the students looked like they were having fun.
12.  The students clapped their hands as the story ended.
13.  The lecturer corrected the student's performance. She told her weakness. (Grammatical error, pronunciation, misspell, gestures, voice, moral lesson)
14.  The lecturer gave the score right away after performing.
15.  The second student came forward.
16.  Not all the students really paid attention to this story. (Rapunzel)
17.  There were students who talking.
18.  The lecturer was scoring during her performance.
19.  The story ended, the class clapped their hands but not so much as the first performance.
20.  The lecturer told her weaknesses and corrected her mistakes.
21.  The lecturer gave her the score on her assignment.
22.  The 3rd student came forward and began to tell the story.
23.  The students didn't really pay attention as well this time.
24.  The class was so quite but the outside class was noisy.
25.  The story ended the students clapped their hands.
26.  The lecturer warned the students outside to keep silence because they bothered this class.
27.  The 4th performer was standing in front of the class.
28.  The students reacted as they clapped their hands in the middle of story.
29.  The whole students in the class gave a big applause.
30.  The lecturer scored it and corrected her
31.  The 5th performer came forward.
32.  The 6th performer came forward.
33.  The 7th performer came. (Bawang merah dan bawang putih)
34.  The 8th performer (Arrogant Queen)
35.  She told the story with a good performance.
36.  All the students paid attention fully.
37.  She got a big applause from the students.
38.  Until 11th performers.
39.  At the end the lecturer handed over the assignments to the students.
40.  The lecturer told about the materials and reviews the materials
41.  The lecturer checked the student's attendance.
42.  The lecturer closed the class.
B. Lecturer activity
1.         The lecturer Greeted to the students
2.         The lecturer asked students for doing Kultum
3.         The lecturer asked students the task. She said, “Have you done the assignment? May be it is the sudden because yes and I know it is suddenly. About Himadiksaris Fair, therefore I gave you the assignment before its finish, I think on Monday.”
4.         The lecturer asked students to submit the task. She said ”alright, now please submitted”
5.         The lecturer gave praise to the students who did the task correctly. she said, “good job, I like it, this really like what I want”
6.         The lecturer gave advice for students who didn’t submit the task. She said, “I have announced you, for the first meeting I asked you to make like this”
7.         The lecturer continued the activity for doing story telling. She said, ”Alright, just continue our story telling”.
8.         The lecturer announced students to use a shoes when doing mid test and final test
9.         The lecturer called one name for doing story telling in front of the class
10.     The lecturer gave attention to the students when student doing story telling in front of class
11.     The lecturer directly assessed the students during tell the story, after student finished the performance, the lecturer told what plus and minus in student’s story telling.
The first Student’s assessment:
a.       No introduction
b.      The story was clearly enough
c.       There were some mistakes in Pronunciation such as: Accompanied, decision, prince, princess, patient, ape, god, happened, forced.
Then the lecturer told the right pronunciation and gave examples in white board likes played, wanted, insulted and etc.
d.      There was no gesture,
e.       There was no moral lesson,
f.       There was changes voice
g.      Having eye contact
h.      Always use veler “eeeeee”
i.        The student was successful in kept attention to the audience
12.  Calling back another student to tell the story and doing the same assessing for the second student
The second student’s assessment:
a.       Loudly enough
b.      There were some mistakes in pronunciation: immediately, beneath, patient. 
c.       No gesture and body movement
d.      No eye contact
e.       There was no moral lesson
f.       No more audience kept attention
13.  The lecturer called the third student and assessed directly
The third student’s assessment:
a.       The voice was too low
b.      There was a little mistake in pronunciation
c.       Having good body movement and good eye contact
d.      There was moral lesson,
e.       The student didn’t keep the attention to the audience, etc.
14.  The lecturer warned the students outside the class to keep silent
15.  Then, the fourth student was called by lecturer
The fourth student’s assessment:
a.       The voice was loudly enough
b.      Only little mistake in pronunciation: Basket, turtle
c.       The student know the story well because she read
d.      Having no good gesture
e.       There was moral lesson
f.       Having good  eye contact
g.      The audience kept attention to the student who told the story in front of the class
16.  The fifth student was called by lecturer to tell the story
The fifth student’s assessment:
a.       The mistakes in pronunciation: chase, stabbed, etc.
b.      The student was confident but in the end of telling the story she was not really confident
c.       Know story well
d.      No gesture
e.       Using body movement
f.       Kept eye contact with audience
g.      Many audience kept attention to the speaker who told the story
h.      The student gave moral value after told the story
17.  The sixth student was called by lecturer
The sixth student’s assessment:
a.       The student spoke loudly
b.      Some mistakes in pronunciation: Basket, turtle, etc
c.       The student knew the story well
d.      The student hidden her face
e.       No gesture
f.       There wasn’t moral lesson
18.  The seventh student was called
The seventh student’s assessment:
Before the lecturer assessed the student’s performance, the lecturer wrote the words in white board such as: would, should, and could. Mine, mean. The lecturer pronounced and explained the differences among these words.
The seventh student’s assessment:
a.       The student knew the story well
b.      Having good expression
c.       Having moral lesson
d.      Having low voice
19.  The eight student was called by the lecturer
The eight student’s assessment:
a.       The student’s voice was very loud
b.      Clearly story, so the audience can follow the story
c.       Told the story not too quickly
d.      Having good gesture and body movement
e.       Having changes in voice
f.       Good eye contact
g.      Having moral attention
h.      The student have unique and creative style in telling the story
The lecturer gave this student an excellent score.
20.  The ninth student was called by lecturer
The ninth student’s assessment:
a.       Having loudly enough voice
b.      Having some mistakes in pronunciation: Sell, chase, decision, worried
c.       The student read the story
d.      Having good expression
e.       Having good body movement
f.       Having good eye contact
g.      Moral lesson wasn’t included
21.  The lecturer called the tenth student.
The assessment:
a.       There was Appropriate introduction
b.      There was moral lesson
c.       The mistake in pronunciation: Sat down
d.      The student was confidence in telling the story
e.       Having good eye contact
f.       Having appropriate gesture
g.      Having changes in voice
h.      Using facial expression and vocal expression
22.  The lecturer called the last student to tell the story in front of the class
The assessment:
a.       There were some mistakes in pronunciation: Someday, except, hurt, live, life, underestimate, and appear.
b.      Having moral in the story
c.       Keeping eye contact
d.      The audience kept the attention, etc.
23.  The lecturer gave  the result of the story telling that has been assessed
24.  Then, the lecturer check the student’s attendance
25.  The lecturer asked the student’s condition who has been ill
26.  The lecturer closed the meeting

C. Students’ attitude in the class
1.             The students answered lecturer’s greeting
2.             A students did ‘Kulltum” before started the study
3.             The students submitted their assignment/ homework
4.              The students talked with the lecturer by using English, but sometimes they spoke Japanese.
5.             The students paid attention to  the lecturer
6.             The students’ followed the study enthusiastically
7.             The students’ did story telling in front of class one by one.
8.             The students cheered for their friends who were going to read the story.
9.             While a student read the story, another students paid attention and the other discussed with their friends.
10.         The students’ laughed when their friends read a funny story
11.         The students gave applause to their friends who have read the story.
12.         The students gave a feedback toward the lecturer assessment.
13.         The students responded the lecturer’s questions
14.         A student helped the lecturer to warn the students outside to keep silent.
15.         The students asked for permission by using English
16.         The students’ received the result of their performance.
17.         The students paid attention to the lecturer at the end of the study.
18.         The students said “present” when the lecturer checked their attendance.
